The Journey To Success

Learning from the best and enjoying the rewards.

By Katya Robinson, aged 17

Shetland Sheepdogs were my mother's choice of breed and I quickly followed her footsteps in the show ring. I never went to any junior handling lessons but instead, I learnt by watching experienced handlers in the ring. I began my showing career at the age of 5 years old starting with Junior Handling classes. When I first began, I mainly took part in handling at breed club shows that had a relaxed atmosphere and have won many Best Junior Handler In Show awards.

The first sheltie who I fell in love with was the late Effie ( Ch Lavika Life Time ) and she was my go-to show dog for junior handling. Effie was a very laid-back sheltie who loved nothing less than cuddles and snoozing in the ring! Together Effie and I won our first Challenge Certificate when I was 7 years old - a day I will never forget.

I have only recently begun taking part in the Young Kennel Club classes for handling and stakes qualified myself for both finals at Crufts 2023. The junior handling classes brings all of our amazing handlers together and I have made some lifelong friends via the show world.

Outside of the junior handling ring, I compete in breed classes with my dogs. I own the tri-colour/blue merle side of Lavika which has been proven to be successful. I made up my first own-bred champion in 2022 with Kai ( Ch Lavika Deep Blue Ocean ) who currently has a tally of 9CCs & 5RCCs. In 2023, I made up the litter sisters Koda ( Ch Lavika Lucid Dreams ) and Beatrice ( Ch Lavika Lagoona Blue of Macstanryn ) and their half-brother Apollo ( Lavika Moonlight Storm JW ) won his first CC , BOB and Pastoral Group 2 at South Wales Ch Show 2023. The highlight of 2023 was winning the Bitch CC and BOS at Crufts with Koda when I was 16 years old. Together, the dogs made Lavika and myself Top Breeder 2023 #1 in Shetland Sheepdogs. My girl Kim ( Lavika Spring Queen JW ) was crowned Top Brood Bitch 2023. She competes in breed and agility competitions. I am so proud of her for producing beautiful examples for our breed. I only hope I can be of inspiration to not only young handlers in the show world but to everyone!

My aim is to present an example on how showing and breeding brings happiness, not just for me but for all competitors and their dogs. In my opinion, a shetland sheepdog can be a great handling dog. Shelties are extremely intelligent and they are eager to please. However, this breed can come with their difficulties. They are table dogs and like most juniors starting I could not lift the dog up and down from the table so most times that was my mother's job! Shelties have a unique speed of a trot - some are best with the handler at a slow jog or a fast walk. They are also a free-stacking breed, which means it can be difficult to see if they are standing correctly. This is why it is imperative to put a lot of time and effort into training for the show ring to get to know how the dog prefers to be shown and how to make the dog look their best. Training, bonding and learning all the aspects of the breed in order to be the best team with your dogs is fun, rewarding and brings happiness to both. I am so pleased my life is filled with such joy of owning shelties . I have learn from possibly the best, my mother!
